Sleeping Prairies

This references the land that was left behind. Along with securities and other valuables that were confiscated, many internees' properties were never given back to their rightful owners. According to Major-General Sir William D. Otter's report, the total amount taken was $329,153.17 of which $298,015.11 was returned, leaving $31,137.73 in the hands of the Receiver General. Real estate was seized by the Custodian of Alien Properties for the future decision of the government. Some internees who either escaped from camps or were eventually released discovered their homesteads taken over by other settlers. This painting depicts a man asleep, dreaming of his home: the big sky, the open land, the vastness, and freedom. He returns, learning that everything was taken from him.
